§ 16.12.010. Streets

  • A. The arrangement, character, extent, width, grade and location of all streets shall be considered in relation to existing and planned streets, to topographical conditions, to public convenience and safety, and in their appropriate relation to the proposed uses of the land to be served, by such streets.

    B. The arrangement of all streets in a subdivision shall provide for the continuation of existing principal streets in surrounding areas; or, to conform to a plan for the neighborhood adopted or approved by the common council.

    C. Where a subdivision borders on or contains a railroad right-of-way or limited access highway right-of-way, the city engineer or city superintendent may require a street approximately parallel to, and on each side of such right-of-way, at a distance suitable for the appropriate use of intervening land.

    D. When connecting street lines deflect from each other at any one point by more than ten (10) degrees, that shall be connected by a curve with a radius adequate to ensure a sight distance of not less than one hundred (100) feet for any adjoining streets. Further, streets shall be laid out so as to intersect, as nearly as possible, at right angles, and no street shall intersect any other street at an angle less than sixty (60) degrees.

    E. Street right-of-way widths shall not be less than as follows:

    1. Streets where heavy flow of traffic is anticipated: eighty (80) feet; all other streets: sixty-six (66) feet.

    2. Cul-de-sacs shall not be less than six hundred (600) feet and shall be provided at the closed end with a turn-around having an outside roadway diameter of at least eighty (80) feet, and street property line diameter of at least one hundred (100) feet.

    F. Street names shall be used which will not be confused with or duplicate the names of existing streets.
